Nuna Pipa Lite Vs Nuna Pipa Infant Car Seat

Picking a car seat is one of those things that can cause a bit of anxiety. You want to find the best balance of quality and affordability, because while you may not have the ability to buy the top-of-the-line of everything your child needs, there are certain items—like car seats—that you will not want to skimp on. After all, this is something that may save your child’s life.
With the Nuna Pipa and Nuna Pipa Lite, you don’t have to worry about quality, because these are two of the best car seats available for your little one, period. The only real question is which one is more suitable for you?
Nuna Pipa
The original Nuna Pipa is a best-selling car seat with industry-leading safety features. Its stroller compatibility and attractive styling only serve to make it more desirable to own.
Both the Pipa and the Pipa Lite make use of the same steel-reinforced base. This base also features a metal anchor (the “load leg”) that extends from the car seat to the floor of your vehicle in order to provide greater stability. Of the two seats, however, only the original Pipa can be installed using just the seat belt and carrier, while the Lite requires the base.
This may prove to be useful for those in urban areas, as it allows the Pipa to be used in a taxi without the need to bring a heavy base with you. Further, the Pipa is FCC certified and can be used if you plan on taking any flights, whereas the Lite lacks FCC certification.
The Pipa uses a 5-point harness, and the installation is quick and easy, taking a little as 5 Seconds. It also features premium, micro-knit fabric and the popular Dream Drape, which creates a shelter to protect your little one from the elements.
Nuna Pipa Lite
So, how does the Lite version differ from the classic Pipa?
The most obvious thing—as implied by the very name—is that it is lighter. Although the Lite still has the safety features that you would expect from a Pipa, it is a remarkable 5.3 pounds lighter than the original.
To be able to offer the safety you want with such a reduction in weight, they have created a thinner, incredibly tough shell by fusing plastic and EPP foam. This creates a tough, but lightweight seat, that is also more comfortable due to the greater flexibility of the foam.
The Lite includes separate inserts for head and body, while the original features a full-body insert. Add a leather-look carry handle, and the Nuna Pipa Lite is almost as comfortable for you as it is for your baby!
Take note, however, if you are a fan of the Dream Drape: the lite does not have this feature. For those concerned about fire-retardant chemicals, the Nuna Pipa Lite uses naturally-resistant materials, and thus does not contain any additional retardants. The original Pipa does contain fire-resistant chemicals, though not on any surfaces that come into direct contact with your baby.
Both seats represent excellent quality and offer a comfortable, safe ride for your child, so the determining factors are likely to be weight, ease-of-installation, and travel concerns. As always, knowing your exact needs will help you determine which seat is best suited for you.
