As the weather heats up many families are hitting the pool, beach or lake to cool off and have some fun in the water. Water activities are a source of joy and recreation but water safety is key especially when it comes to kids and infants. Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in young children but with the right precautions these can be prevented. In this post we will go over 5 water safety tips for kids and infants so you can have a safe and fun aquatic experience.
1. Supervision Is Non-Negotiable
The number one rule of water safety for kids is constant, focused supervision. No matter how good a child is in the water they should never be left unattended near water. Designate a responsible adult as the water watcher, someone who is watching the kids in the water and not distracted by other activities or devices. Remember drowning can happen quickly and silently so supervision is key.
2. Start Swimming Lessons Early
Get your child in swimming lessons as soon as possible. Many programs offer classes for infants and toddlers to get them comfortable in the water. Formal swimming lessons can give children water skills and confidence but always remember lessons are not a substitute for supervision especially for younger children.
3. Use Appropriate Floatation Devices
For kids and infants who are not strong swimmers make sure they wear properly fitted floatation devices, such as life jackets, when near or in the water. Choose a life jacket designed for their age, size and activity level and make sure it fits snugly. These devices are extra security but never replace supervision.
For infants 20-30 lbs we recommend the Salus Nimbus Life Vest:
4. Secure Pool and Water Access
If you have a pool at home you need multiple layers of protection. Install a four sided fence around the pool area with a self-closing, self-latching gate. This barrier should isolate the pool from the house and yard so a child can’t get in without your knowledge. Also consider installing alarms on doors leading to the pool area to alert you if a child tries to enter without your knowledge.
5. Teach Water Safety Rules
Teach your kids water safety from a young age. Teach them to enter the water feet first and not to run near the pool. Remind them never to push or dunk other kids underwater and to stay away from pool drains and filters. Instill a healthy respect for the water and its dangers but also encourage them to have fun in the water safely.
In summary water safety for kids and infants is a shared responsibility among parents, caregivers and the community. By following these 5 tips you can protect your kids and make their water experiences fun and safe. Remember prevention is key and proactive measures can make all the difference in keeping your little ones safe around water.
