4 Ways to Adjust Your Baby for Daylight Saving Time
As the seasons change so do the times. Daylight Saving Time (DST) brings longer days and warmer weather. But for parents of young children adjusting to the time change can be tough especially when it comes to getting your baby to sleep. With the clocks springing forward this Sunday, March 10, 2024 it’s time to prepare ahead to minimize the disruption to your baby’s routine. Here are 4 ways to help you and your little one adjust:
1. Gradual Adjustment:
Start adjusting your baby’s sleep schedule a few days before the time change. Move their bedtime, nap times and meal times 15 minutes earlier each day leading up to DST. This gradual approach will help your baby’s internal clock adjust to the time change more smoothly.
2. Stick to Routine:
Consistency is key with babies and sleep. Stick to your usual bedtime routine to let your baby know it’s time to wind down and sleep. Whether it’s a warm bath, soothing lullabies or a bedtime story - see our book selection, familiarity can help your baby feel secure and ready for sleep.
3. Natural Light:
Light is key to our circadian rhythm. During the day get your baby outside or open the curtains and blinds. Natural light tells your baby’s body it’s daytime and promotes wakefulness and alertness. In the evening dim the lights to signal bedtime.
4. Sleep Environment:
Make sure your baby’s sleep environment is sleep friendly. Keep the room dark, quiet and at a comfortable temperature. Consider using Tommee Tippee blackout curtains to block out any extra light that may disrupt your baby’s sleep especially with the longer days ahead.
It may take some time for your baby to fully adjust. Be patient and flexible as you go through this with your little one. If they experience any sleep disruptions offer comfort and reassurance. Every baby is different so what works for one may not work for another. Listen to your baby and adjust accordingly. Some will adjust quickly to the time change and others will need more time and patience.
In a nutshell, by following these tips and paying attention to your baby’s needs you can make the transition to Daylight Saving Time easier for you and your little one. Remember consistency, patience and gradual adjustment are key to a smooth transition. With a little prep and a lot of love you can help your baby spring forward into the new season.
